Ein lesenswertes und sehr klar geschriebenes Buch über die Cum/Ex und Cum/Cum Skandale, welche leider immer noch von verbrecherischen Finanzinstituten in Deutschland und Europa betrieben werden. Das Thema wird sehr verständlich erklärt und geht dabei auch ein wie der Staat sich besser aufstellen kann, um solche Verbrechen zu verhindern und ordnungsgemäß zu bestrafen. Beispielsweise muss die Kommunikation in Behörden zwischen Hierarchiestufen und hierarchiestufenübergreifend die Norm werden. Verwaltungsebenen müssen reduziert werden und dadurch die Operative gestärkt werden. Fachkarrieren sollten der Standard sein. Das Beamtentum muss durchlässig sein: Es muss viel einfacher werden aus der Privatwirtschaft Beamter zu werden und umgekehrt (natürlich mit Regeln um Korruption zu verhindern). Es muss möglich sein jahrelang Fachwissen aufzubauen ohne nach 2 Jahren weitergeschickt zu werden und alles von vorne zu beginnen. Finanzverbrechen, wie Geldwäsche und Steuerbetrug sollten zentral von einer Stelle verfolgt werden, die mit Fachkräften mit jahrelanger Erfahrung besetzt ist. Die beeindruckenden Erfolge der Teams der Autorin zeigen, dass es möglich ist, aber auch das es ohne Hindernisse für Staat und Gesellschaft wesentlich kostengünstiger wäre. Dazu zu empfehlen ist das Interview mit der Autorin (Jung & Naiv Folge 798 Anne Brorhilker). Die Autorin macht nun bei dem Verein Finanzwende mit, der das Ziel hat die Situation für Gesellschaft und Staat stark zu verbessern durch Verhinderung und effiziente Aufdeckung von Finanzverbrechen wie Cum/Cum und Cum/Ex.

Nowadays no one needs anymore an explanation of what enshittification means, but this book provides various real cases in the IT and other industries how enshittification works and explains how it endangers societies and economies. The current human epoch is thus described as Enshittocene. Enshittification describes the natural history of companies (in the beginning only tech-companies, but nowadays all possible industries): 1) platforms are good to their users 2) They abuse users to make things better for their business customers 3) They abuse business customers to get all value for themselves 4) they have become a giant pile of shit (no benefits for anyone except for the platform owner). Examples are given in Facebook (Meta), Google, Apple, Amazon, Twitter, Uber, TikTok, but also other industries (e.g. poultry packing in the US - "Chickenization"). Key parts are heavily spying on their user base, building of cartels and subscription models as well as lock-in techniques. He reinforces that there needs competition and argues well that monopolies are bad for everyone. The aforementioned companies heavily abuse the law and promote lobbyist in all parts of the government. Antitrust law is an important mean - if designed right to avoid monopolies. Monopolies have counter-interests and invent many tricks to circumvent law (e.g. by offering service as an app). The bill for this has to be paid by consumers and society. Nevertheless, he gives existing examples how this can be fought (e.g. via the gigworker apps Para and Tuyul), gaps in existing regulations (e.g. EU copyright and IP law should not be modeled like US law), new regulations that help to increase competition and lead to better economies as well as societies (e.g. right to repair, interoperable solutions) and technical interoperable solutions (e.g. ActivityPub standard used in Mastodon, Bookwyrm etc.). The book concludes with a negative and positive outlook. This book targets a wide range of groups in society - not only technical people, but everyone and it should be seen as a corner stone to a more sovereign Europe.

This autobiography of John Romero describes his career path in the gaming industry from its very beginning to recent times. It features many well-known games, such as Commander Keen, Wolfenstein, Heretic and Doom. It connected for me a lot of dots that were not clear to me in the beginning, especially how the different games related to each other and his relations to other game studios. Especially interesting were the different game mechanics and their evolution over time. These games have been the parents of many other games and game ideas up until todays time. He also explains the impact of working in the gaming industry on his private life, which can be rather significant. The book is relevant for anyone working in the game industry and that want to understand also all the "other" things needed to make a game successful beside providing a brilliant game play (such as managing staff, publications, distribution and communities).

Schopenhauer beschreibt in diesem Buch verschiedene "Kunstgriffe", um Recht in einer Debatte zu behalten. Diese Kunstgriffe sind nicht immer moralisch einwandfrei (z.B. ein Kunstgriff beinhaltet den Gegner zu beschimpfen), jedoch sollte man diese Kunstgriffe verstehen, damit man sich gegen "unmoralische" Kunstgriffe wehren kann. Es verbleibt dann bei jedem selber welchen Kunstgriff man anwendet. Nicht jede Debatte muss man gewinnen, aber jede Debatte wird (hoffentlich) zu einer Reflexion der Teilhabenden führen. Schopenhauer erwähnt auch, dass eine Debatte nur Sinn macht, wenn eine Debatte von den Teilnehmenden gewünscht ist. Wenn sie nicht eine Debatte zur Selbstreflexion nutzen möchten, sondern nur um Recht zu haben, wird sie keinen Sinn haben. Schopenhauer stand diesem Werk (Die Kunst Recht zu haben) zeitlebens kritisch gegenüber, weil er angewidert von den Kunstgriffen war, weil sie "alle[r] dieser Schlupfwinkel der mit Eigensinn, Eitelkeit und Unredlichkeit verschwisterten Beschränktheit und Unfähigkeit“ aufzeigen. Er hatte dieses Werk nie zu Lebzeiten veröffentlicht.

A well-researched and well-written book on the inner working of the ocean "machine". From curiosities, such as where eels come from and where they go, to impact on life of everyone on the planet. Still we know very little about the ocean and its future (and thus impact on us), so we need to treat it much better for sure.

• Red Mars was published in the 1990s and is about a future of humans on Mars starting in 2026. From the perspective of the author in the 1990s, it is about a joint American-Russian colonization on the planet ("the first 100") with similarities to the world powers at this time and the mindset of that tie. Nevertheless, the author predicts certain developments of earth that resemble the reality we see today, such as weak united nations and powerful transnational corperations. Interesting discussions emerge on Mars on terraforming the planet or not. Another aspect is governance of Mars. However, the world war due to the situation on earth (debts, conflicts around limited resources, population growth) has immediate impact on Mars, such as troops bringing violence and a lot of newcomers to Mars.
