“Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory” is a short story set in the world of Martha Well's Murderbot Diaries. This is my third murderbot short story (are there more?) and my favorite one so far. It's one of the two out of three that are not in the traditional murderbot first person narrative, which I still have trouble getting used to (it takes me a few pages to realize this is not murderbot talking) but I like this use of short stories to bring in different POVs. This story more clearly serves as a fill-in-the-blank between novels and has some more emotional heft than the others (humans have feelings, too), but I like all these murderbot appetizers.

While this short story left me wanting more, it also sparked a desire to hear from other characters like Ratthi, Pin-Lee, and Gurathin. Their perspectives could add even more depth to the story and the universe Wells has created. Despite its brevity, "Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory" is a compelling addition to The Murderbot Diaries, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse into the complexities of Preservation Station and its inhabitants.
It was a fine 50 page little story.
