Brandon Sanderson: The Bands of Mourning (2016, Tor Books)

Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the …

Very entertaining, although I was disappointed that it still wasn't the conclusion of the second era. More yet to come.

In terms of character development it was quite expected, following a default narrative. I had no problem with that, it makes for easily digestible reading. Just the way Marasi suddenly got over Wax was a bit too convenient and it felt like lazy writing.

But I will definitely follow the next Mistborn novels. And I am at last intrigued enough to care about the Cosmere.

I would say somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. I quite enjoyed it, much more than the original trilogy. I like the characters and the story has the right amount of action and drama. It's also the first time that the idea of the Cosmere, where most of Sanderson's books are set, became even remotely interesting to me. So, right on to the next one.

Mike Baron: Star wars (2010, Dark Horse Books)

It has been, oh, wow, a quarter of a century since i read the Zahn books these graphic novels are based on. I found it quite nice to get back with the original Extended Universe, before the reset after Disney bought the rights to Star Wars. The graphic novel is nicely done and adds to the books, in that it provides some visuals. I recommend it if you've read the Zahn books.

I bought the first three books in a sale for about 2 Euro, thinking I'm getting a complete trilogy. I thought the first book was a bit trashy, although also quite entertaining. The series is a weird mix of Jack Reacher meets the A-Team meets flintlock fantasy. I kept on reading and found that it is hard to put the books down. To my pleasant surprise I found out that there are eight full books and some novellas in this series. I will definitely make my way through the books because while this is definitely not high literature it is an fun waste of time.

Apparently I read this already 9 years ago, but I remembered none of that when I just read it (again).

But what I wrote then still stands. I am a sucker for good detective stories and if they happen to cross over to my other favorite genres, such as sci-fi or fantasy, I enjoy them even more. Scalzi knows how to write an entertaining book. The writing is not perfect, the dialogue a bit too quippy at times. But it's still an entertaining story. Recommended if you enjoy detective stories in a sci-fi setting.

I have no idea why or when I read this book. It's not the kind of book I usually read. But I did read it and some of it stuck with me through the years. When I faintly remembered some plot points I decided to find out from which book they were from and it turned out it was this.

Overall I do not remember that I took an exceptionally liking to this book. Probably because, again, this is not the kind of book I usually read. It was an OK story, but I don't think I really liked the two protagonists.

It took me about 100 pages to get into this book, but then I couldn't put it down. Thank Kresimir the last book is already available so I can just continue.

Excellent second part of what is so far an excellent trilogy. I recommend this to everyone who doesn't mind some gunpowder in their fantasy.
