#4

Okay, I know DDC is literary junk food but hear me out. It is also attempting something novel and it's a freaking great attempt. This is a fresh twist on LitRPG and filled with a seemingly endless pool of ideas. Part four continues with strong character development and also dives deeper into the world that created the dungeon. On many evenings I struggled to put the book down. Towards the end I was literally screaming into my pillow.

Other than that I just have another minor thought I'd like to share: the first book felt like it didn't go through a thorough review process. The story was amazing but there was quite an intense amount of misspellings and some plot holes. Anyway, turns out, that feeling wasn't inaccurate: DDC was originally self published. This book (#4) is the first one of the series that feels really well reviewed although each preceding book enhanced in that domain compared to its predecessor.

I read this one out of order, after #3 and #4 because they were in Volume 2, but now I'm filled in the missing backstory. This settles the question whether the stories are readable as standalones, yes they are, but reading in order helps to understand the references to past murderbot mayhem, and uncomfortable human feeeelings, and ships passing in the night encounters with other bottish, whoa re the real stars (or guest stars, as there seems to be a different non-recurring set in each episode), with distinctive personalities. The humans all kind of blur together for me, and generally they're idiots (I'm starting to sound like murderbot). One thing I feel obliged to note, the term for sexbots is uncomfortably reminiscent of the term used for forced prostitutes in WWII, which is either cleverly deliberate or unintentionally disturbing (like the confederacy overtones in Firefly, although I suppose that could have been cleverly deliberate). Anyway, back on track and on to #5.

Knock! #4 ist eine Rückkehr zur Topform der ersten beiden Nummern, mit einem klaren Fokus auf die modernere Formen des Old School Rollenspiels. Außerdem ist das vierte Knock! ganz klar auch eine Reaktion auf das OGL-Debakel Anfang 2023 - es gibt einiges Material für das freie Creative Commons-lizensierte Crack! Regelwerk der Merry Mushmen, auch sonst geht es viel um den Weg weg von D&D 5E zu anderen Regelwerk und insbesondere (natürlich) zur OSR, so hat bezeichnenderweise auch Shadowdark Autorin Kelsey Dionne einige Zeilen beigesteuert. Insgesamt zeigt sich nach der Ausrichtung der ersten Ausgaben als Sammlung alter, ausgesuchter Juwelen aus den OSR-Blogs eine Tendenz zu eigens für Knock! geschriebene neuen Texten. Die Qualität ist durchweg sehr gut. Für mich sind die interessantes Artikel die kurzen ein- bis zweiseitigen Ideen, Tabellen, Hausregeln und allgemein einfach inspirierenden Gedanken, wie das Spiel sich erweitern, unterhaltsamer und bunter gestalten lässt - kurz: Genau das, was für mich immer schon das Beste an der OSR/NSR Bewegung war. Erwähnt werden sollten neben der gewohnt fabelhaften Aufmachung auch einige sehr interessante neue Charakterklassen und ein paar knappe, sofort einsetzbare Abenteuer und Schauplätze. Der Band erhält meine absolute Empfehlung - ein großes Lesevergnügen und zudem gutes Futter für das SL-Hirn.
