i've really loved some of mia's older books, so this one not hitting was disappointing. i kind of wish we got all the flashbacks in one chunk instead of going back and forth almost every chapter. the pacing also felt questionable to me - mari is basically set to marry another person until the last few chapters? it didn't seem like there were many meaningful new developments between javi and mari in the present day, and i would say normally my bar is so low with present day character and relationship development (a second chance romance is my catnip and i will let a second chance romance get away with things that others don't).
