I should probably rate this higher; but I found it less good than the previous four. It's great picking back up with the first book and understanding a lot more of the motivation. But then that story felt very predictable, and the conclusions quite predictable. The battles are repetitive, and really lost impact for me.
To rate the first five Recluce books though, 4 stars overall. They're pretty good, and definitely do something interesting in the story-telling. Even if they almost deliberately make it difficult to remember which minor character is which "the thin wizard" in a 2 page chapter that's doing a very film-style quick aside.
