Wealthy, insecure Helen Clarvoe, living alone in a California town, first thought she was the victim of an unknown lunatic. But soon it turned out that the threatening voice on the telephone belonged to none other than Evelyn Merrick, a former childhood friend who was everything that Helen would have liked to have been.

Shy and lonely, Helen was a woman no one could be nice to. Thinking that Evelyn meant to destroy her, she enlisted her financial agent, Paul Blacksheer, to find Evelyn. His search took him far afield, and soon the ugly web of terror began to envelop other innocent lives.

For Evelyn, exploiting latent fears in each of her enemies, found her main satisfaction in life by bringing pain and evil to all who got in her way. Her unusual phone calls carried the hatred and vengeance of her dangerously split personality to almost incredible lengths, as she brought destruction to her various victims.
