Edmond Dantes, a sailor, returns home to Marseilles with the cargo he was assigned to retrieve and news of the death of that ship's captain. After making his report to the boss of the shipping company he is promoted to captain because of his loyalty and perserverance and joins his fiance to plan their wedding. On his wedding day he is arrested and falsely accused as a traitorous Napoleonic conspirator and sent to the Isle Chateau D'If where he is to remain imprisoned for the rest of his life and suffer unrelenting torture. In this prison after seven years and almost giving up hope, he meets Abbe Faria who is also sentenced to be incarcerated on the Isle forever. Le Comte de Monte-Cristo m’a donné le plaisir rare d’un roman qui semble pouvoir tout contenir. Alexandre Dumas y mêle l’aventure, le complot, l’amour, la prison, l’argent et la justice dans une histoire d’une énergie extraordinaire. Dès les premières pages, Edmond Dantès paraît destiné à une vie heureuse. Il est jeune, aimé et sur le point de devenir capitaine. Cette promesse rend sa chute plus brutale.

Victime d’une dénonciation préparée par des hommes jaloux, Edmond est enfermé sans procès au château d’If. Son emprisonnement pourrait n’être qu’un épisode de malheur, mais Dumas en fait une transformation complète. La rencontre avec l’abbé Faria lui apporte savoir, discipline et l’espoir d’un trésor caché. J’ai trouvé cette relation particulièrement émouvante, car elle donne à Edmond une seconde naissance avant sa fuite.
