“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Yarros masters the power of Cliffhangers once again

Dang, I’m conflicted While I was reading this book I thought it felt WAY too long, like a lot of the book could have been condensed. A lot happened in this book!! I went through phases of loving it and then being tired of it and then loving it again. After reading fourth wing I really wanted this book to get to the real story and action; this book really delivered that. I was debating whether to give this book 3 or 4 stars (I’d give 3.5 if that was an option), but I have to go with 4 because the ending was worth the sometimes difficult effort to get through the details of this book. I’m annoyed to say it, but the cliffhanger was so good I may just have to continue on and read the 3rd book.
