Tanzania 1909, when he is 12 Yusuf is taken away from his by merchant Aziz because his father can't pay his debts anymore. He works in Aziz's shop under the supervision of Khalil, an older boy, who was pawned. When Yusuf becomes older and stronger Aziz takes him on a long, adventurous and dangerous journey to remote places where they trade goods. By the time they return to Aziz's home Yusuf has grown into a strong and good looking young man.
This summary covers most of the book. I enjoyed reading it, because it was very fascinating and well written.
Eventually Yusuf gets dragged into Aziz's family affairs. I feel that last section of the book was poorly plotted.
